PRP Compared – What’s Really Behind the Unicorn Lift and Skin Boosters

Eigenbluttherapien im Trend – doch was wirkt wirklich?

PRP oder Unicorn-Lift? – Was hinter den Eigenbluttherapien wirklich steckt

Artikelserie PRP – Titelgrafik

Terms like autologous blood therapy, "Vampire Facial", "Unicorn Lift" or skin boosters keep showing up on social media and in clinics – often without any clear distinction. At our practice in Herzogenaurach, near Erlangen, Nuremberg and Fürth, we deliberately rely on treatments that are scientifically proven and safe. This article sorts out what PRP actually is, how it differs from two commonly confused alternatives – and which treatment fits which skin concern.

PRP – The Original Among Blood-Based Therapies

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a well-established procedure in medicine and aesthetics, used for many years.

  • Preparation: Platelet-rich plasma is obtained from your own blood.
  • Effect: Contains your body's own growth factors (VEGF, PDGF, TGF-β), which improve cell regeneration, collagen formation and skin quality.
  • Evidence: Numerous clinical studies confirm effectiveness for skin rejuvenation, acne scars and hair loss [PubMed ID: 31425643, 33412101].

Comparison 1: PRP vs. "Unicorn Lift"

How does PRP differ from other autologous blood methods, such as the so-called polynucleotide-like serum increasingly marketed as a "Unicorn Lift"?

The so-called autologous conditioned serum (ACS), also known as a polynucleotide-like product, is increasingly offered under this marketing name.

  • Preparation: Blood is incubated for several hours in specialized tubes, then processed to be cell-free.
  • Content: barely any platelets, but anti-inflammatory proteins such as the IL-1 receptor antagonist.
  • Origin: Developed for orthopedics (arthritis, joint conditions).
  • Evidence: High-quality studies on effectiveness for skin or hair are still lacking – the evidence base is clearly weaker than for PRP. Established in orthopedics, not yet sufficiently studied in aesthetics.
Criterion PRP Polynucleotide-like Product
Goal Regeneration, collagen building, skin quality Anti-inflammatory, little data on skin
Content platelet-rich, growth-factor-rich platelet-free, inflammation-modulating
Evidence strong study base in dermatology & aesthetics evidence mainly in orthopedics
Conclusion established, scientifically proven procedure eye-catching marketing name, unclear effect

Comparison 2: PRP vs. Skin Booster

Skin boosters using non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid are the second common alternative. Both PRP and skin boosters strengthen the skin from within, improving firmness, hydration and radiance. But they work in different ways and suit different skin needs.

Question PRP Skin Booster
Mechanism Cell activation (own blood) Moisture binding (hyaluronic acid)
Focus Regeneration & structural improvement Hydration & glow
Especially suited for Scarring, dull skin, acne Dryness, fine lines
Treatment intervals 2–3 sessions, every 4–6 weeks 2–3 sessions, every 3–4 weeks
Side effects minimal, your own substance mild stinging, rare redness

Skin boosters are ideal for dry, dehydrated skin, loss of firmness from sun exposure or aging, preventively from age 30+, and especially around the cheeks, neck or décolletage.

What's Right for You?

Our recommendation: PRP tends to suit more mature skin in need of regeneration. Skin boosters tend to suit younger patients with a lack of moisture. What's right for you is best determined by an actual assessment.

  • Acne scars, tired skin or uneven texture → PRP
  • Dryness-related fine lines or loss of radiance → Skin booster
  • Long-term skin quality → Diagnostics + combination therapy

Skin Longevity, Not Surface Treatment

At our practice, we combine aesthetics with science – and select every treatment individually. Under the guiding principle "Harmony of Aesthetics", skin health is at the center of what we do, not quick fixes.

  • Individual skin analysis & consultation
  • Lab diagnostics where needed (e.g. zinc, ferritin, vitamin D)
  • Combination treatments possible (PRP + booster)

Our Position: Evidence Before Marketing

Guided by the principle "Natural. Scientific. Personal.", we rely on authentic, scientifically proven procedures. We want you to understand why a therapy works – not just what it's called. That's why we work exclusively with CE-certified PRP systems and perform every treatment under medical supervision.

Our standard: safety, naturalness and transparency – not trendy names and unproven claims. In our practice, what matters is not the name, but the effect – scientifically proven and medically supervised.
