Procedures for colorectal cancer screening in Herzogenaurach

1. The stool test

1. Pick up the test card

Provided that a stool test is to be conducted on you, you will receive a test card from our practice. We then conduct a so-called iFOBT = immunological FOBT test. This test is used to detect occult blood in the stool. It is a screening method for the secondary prevention of colorectal cancer.

2. Conduct the test at home

You can perform the stool test at home by yourself. You will apply a stool sample to the test strip and hygienically seal it.

3. Return the test card to the practice

Once we have received the test back from you, we will send it to our laboratory for evaluation. Our practice will then receive the result within one day and we will inform you promptly.

2. Palpation examination

During the palpation examination, first, the anus is examined for signs of small fissures or hemorrhoids. Then the rectum is gently palpated. Rectal carcinomas close to the anus can be detected early with this palpation examination, sometimes even in preliminary stages.

3. Colonoscopy

Currently, the colonoscopy is considered the most reliable method for the early detection of colorectal cancer. With this examination, precursors of colorectal cancer, known as adenomas, can also be identified and in some cases removed during the same session. Thus, the colonoscopy is not only an examination for early detection but can also prevent the development of colorectal cancer in its preliminary stages.

This examination is carried out in a specialized internist’s practice or in a hospital.
