Collagen Supplements for Skin Aging – What the Current Evidence Really Says

What female patients really should know

Collagen Supplements for Skin Aging? Evidence 2025

Many of my female patients tell me that they have already tried collagen powder, capsules, or drinks – often in the hope of keeping their skin smooth, firm, and youthful for longer. Advertisements and influencers promise astonishing results, and some colleagues also recommend these preparations. But the crucial question is: Is there really a verifiable effect – or is it rather an expensive promise?

A recent systematic review and meta-analysis from the American Journal of Medicine (2025, PMID: 40324552) has examined this question very closely. The result is sobering.

What the current study shows

  • 23 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with 1474 participants were analyzed.
  • Overall, improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle depth were observed with collagen supplements.

However, the detailed analysis paints a clear picture

  • No effect in high-quality, independent studies
Significant effects only in pharma-funded or methodologically weaker studies
  • The authors conclude: There is no reliable clinical evidence that justifies collagen supplements for skin rejuvenation.
In other words: Positive results are found almost exclusively where financial interests are at play or study quality is low.

Opportunities, Effects, and Potential Side Effects

Opportunities & Effects

  • Collagen preparations are generally well-tolerated and are often advertised as "natural".
  • Subjectively, some female patients report better skin hydration or stronger nails.

Scientifically, however, these effects cannot yet be distinguished from placebo effects.

Side Effects & Risks

  • Collagen typically comes from animal sources (e.g., bovine, porcine, fish).
  • Allergic reactions are rare but possible.
  • Some preparations are not strictly controlled – residues or impurities cannot be ruled out.

Above all, however: The greatest risk lies in misplaced trust – many female patients invest large sums over years without proven benefits for the skin.

Important to know: Perimenopause & Joints

The mentioned meta-analysis exclusively refers to skin aging – not to bone or joint health.

During perimenopause and beyond, collagen preparations are occasionally discussed for supporting joints or bones. There are separate studies on this, which show partly positive, partly neutral results. However, this question was not investigated in the meta-analysis and should not be equated with the effect on the skin.

💡 Practical relevance: Where you should better invest your money

Many women between 30 and 50 desire a sustainable improvement in skin quality. It is important to know the difference between marketing promises and scientific evidence.

Collagen supplements are currently not evidence-based for skin rejuvenation.

Those who want to improve skin quality will find significantly more substantiated options in medically proven methods such as:

  • PRP (autologous blood therapy)
  • Skinboosters
  • Biostimulators (e.g., polynucleotides)
  • HIFU
  • LED phototherapy (LED-Phototherapie)

– individually adapted and medically supervised.

🌿 Conclusion – Harmony in Aesthetics Also Means Honesty

In my practice in Herzogenaurach, I experience daily how important skin health is for well-being. But equally important is honesty: collagen powder is not a miracle cure for wrinkles.

The best investment is a combination of a healthy lifestyle, evidence-based therapies, and a natural, holistic approach – adapted to your individual skin and life stage.
