Lip Lines –
the fine lines around the mouth that linger.

Lip lines are the fine vertical lines that form around the mouth — sometimes known as “lipstick lines” because makeup can bleed into them. They develop due to years of muscle movement, volume loss, and the breakdown of the collagen framework. By precisely injecting very fine hyaluronic acid into these lines, they can be significantly softened — without restricting the natural movement of the lips.

The Goal: smoother skin around the mouth — natural and flexible.

Description

Perioral lines — when the mouth reveals more than intended

Perioral lines develop over the years due to the interplay of several factors: The muscles around the mouth contract thousands of times daily — when speaking, smiling, drinking. The collagen structure thins, and the volume around the lips decreases. The skin folds into small vertical lines that are visible even at rest. For women who wear lipstick, the effect is particularly noticeable — the color bleeds into the lines and makes them even more prominent.

Patients from Erlangen and Nuremberg, who come to me in Herzogenaurach, often inquire about perioral lines as part of a more comprehensive mouth area treatment. Sometimes it is the only wish — and even that is a complete treatment in itself.

Why Perioral Lines Require Special Precision

The skin around the mouth is very thin and moves intensely. This places special demands on the treatment — both in terms of the product and the technique:

  • Product selection:For perioral lines, very soft, low-crosslinked hyaluronic acid products are used. Hyaluronic acid that is too firm in this zone would form nodules or impair natural lip movement.
  • Technique:The hyaluronic acid is injected into individual wrinkles — linearly, in small quantities. Not a filling of the entire zone, but targeted smoothing of individual lines.
  • Supplementation with Skinboosters:For the skin quality around the mouth — not just the wrinkles themselves, but also the skin’s texture and hydration — a combination with a skinbooster or a bioregenerative treatment is often the most sensible approach. Honest Assessment: What Hyaluronic Acid Can Do — and What It Can’t

Hyaluronic acid can significantly soften perioral lines — but it cannot make them disappear completely. This is because the area is too mobile and the wrinkles are too deeply ingrained in the skin structure. What is realistically possible: a noticeable smoothing that makes the overall appearance of the mouth area calmer and fresher. And: Lipstick no longer bleeds into the lines. That may sound unspectacular — but it isn’t when you experience it.

Frequently Asked Questions about Perioral Lines

+How long does the result last?
In the highly mobile lip area, hyaluronic acid lasts shorter than in less active areas — typically 4 to 6 months. Regular refreshers at this rhythm continuously maintain the result. Complementary treatments like skinboosters improve skin quality in the area long-term and extend the result.
+Can Botox help with perioral lines?
Theoretically yes — but with caution. A very small amount of Botox can reduce muscle movement around the lips and thus slow down wrinkle formation. However, too much Botox in this zone impairs speaking and drinking. It is an option that must be weighed individually — and which I only use very sparingly and after careful analysis.
+Is the treatment painful?
The skin around the mouth is more sensitive than the cheeks or forehead. I routinely recommend an anesthetic cream before the treatment — this makes the treatment well-tolerated by most patients. The hyaluronic acid products used for this zone also contain Lidocaine.
