Magnesium Infusion with Vitamins B6 and B12
Intravenous magnesium (3 mmol) with vitamins B6 and B12 in physiological saline. Appropriate after medical assessment — for example with a laboratory-confirmed magnesium deficiency, when oral supplementation is not tolerated or insufficient. Performed under supervision, billed according to GOÄ.
Description
Composition
| Magnesium | 3 mmol |
| Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) | 25 mg |
| Vitamin B12 (depot form) | 1.5 mg |
| Carrier solution | NaCl 0.9%, 500 ml |
When this infusion makes sense — and when it does not
Appropriate with a confirmed magnesium deficiency when oral supplements are not tolerated (commonly: gastrointestinal side effects) or insufficient. With intact absorption, oral intake is generally equivalent — then I recommend the cheaper tablet, not the infusion. Important contraindications include relevant renal impairment and certain cardiac arrhythmias.
Safety and procedure
The infusion typically runs 30–60 minutes under medical supervision — professionally placed venous access, monitoring throughout, full emergency equipment on site. As a board-certified anaesthesiologist, this is my core specialty. Billed as a private service according to the German GOÄ fee schedule; costs are discussed transparently in advance.
