Back pain during pregnancy and postpartum

MANUAL MEDICINE | CHIROPRACTIC

Pregnancy and back pain

Most expectant mothers suffer from back pain during pregnancy. Patients usually feel the pain between the lower ribs and the buttocks. The pain often radiates to the thigh, knee, or even down to the calf.

The impact of hormones

Hormonal changes and adjustments occur in the female body from the very beginning of pregnancy. The hormones released during pregnancy cause the tissue to become softer. In particular, the stabilizing ligaments in the pelvic area can no longer fully perform their function. The reduced stability can increase stress in the pelvic and back area, ultimately leading to a functional disorder with pain.
